In the community...FOR THE COMMUNITY!
While, indeed, the vast majority of our membership, and
the minority community, is derived from the City of Providence, the issues
which concern us all are present in each community across the state. Whether
to a small degree or large, covertly or overtly, the trauma of interaction
with law enforcement authority, and the justice system as a whole, affects
and impacts each of us, young and old, in our daily lives.
The Rhode Island Minority Police Association provides various programs
and assistance year-round to the state-wide community.
-
HEROES OF
COLOR: We must be aware of our past, so that we may shape
our future. Enhance your education and information through this online
quiz about famous people of African American and Hispanic heritage
-
HISTORY
OF MINORITY POLICING IN AMERICA: All too often, the efforts and
accomplishments of men and women of color in the law enforcement profession
have gone unrecognized. Here, we provide a brief history of those
accomplishments.
-
SUMMER
COMPUTER CAMP: Law Enforcement, Education and Technology Summer
Computer Camp is geared towards providing minority and disadvantaged
youth with enhanced exposure to the technology needed to succeed in
school and life careers. To obtain an application, click
here. MUST BE COMPLETED AND RETURNED by July 9, 2004.
- BREAKING THE DIGITAL DIVIDE: As an
extension of our technology camp, we provide reconditioned, used computers
to families in the community that need them. In this way, we are able
to strengthen the skills and extend the knowledge base of those who
are being left behind in the digital world.
-
ONLINE
FORMS: You may forward information regarding perceived incidents
of Law Enforcement Officer Misconduct, or General Information and
Comments.
-
ANNUAL TURKEY-TROT:
Given during the Thanksgiving Holiday season, we distribute the necessary
food items to cook a full family meal to those who are in the direst
of need.
-
ADOPTIVE SCHOOLS:
Because of our commitment to the youth of our communities, we have
adopted these schools as our own
- Alfred A. Lima Sr. Elementary School: Each year we provide
for a special gift for the younger children at this school, named
for the first African American law enforcement officer in the City
of Providence.
- Sgt. Cornel Young Elementary School: In conjunction with
the Providence Police Department, this school is named for the first
African American law enforcement officer slain
on duty in the State of Rhode Island
-
SPECIAL PROGRAMMING:
We provide specialized information in the form of a uniquely designed
program geared towards enabling and empowering our communities. "What
to do When Stopped By the Police?" provides both the youth of
the community, as well as their parents, with needed and highly useful
information which may both temper and soften adversity in their contacts
with law enforcement.
-
LAW
ENFORCEMENT OFFICER RECRUITMENT: While we strongly believe
in the concepts that candidates for law enforcement positions, REGARDLESS
OF THEIR COLOR, must be of the highest calibre,
we also recognize that there is a need for greater participation of
men and women of color in the law enforcement community of Rhode Island.
Consequently, we actively encourage persons of color to apply for
the various positions which become available,
as well as to register their employment
interests with us for future reference.
- LEGAL NEWS: The community MUST
BE EDUCATED regarding changes in the law that affect their everyday
life, whether it be a local issue or nationally, as it may affect their
INTERACTIONS WITH THE POLICE.
